Fire cupping is a centuries-old healing method from Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses controlled flame to create therapeutic suction inside glass cups placed on the skin. The brief use of heat creates suction in the cup. The resulting pulling sensation may produce temporary marks and changes in surface circulation.
Unlike pump cupping, traditional fire cupping creates suction using heat rather than a mechanical pump. Neither method is established as more effective for every condition, and the duration and intensity are adjusted to the individual.
At Wellness Body Worx in Etobicoke, every fire cupping session is personalized to your body's needs. We use controlled flame techniques, monitor skin response, and adapt suction to comfort and safety. Temporary marks, tenderness, or other adverse effects can occur.
During fire cupping therapy, our registered TCM acupuncturist briefly introduces flame into a glass cup to create a vacuum, then quickly places it on specific areas of your body. As the air inside cools, it creates suction that:
Cupping can leave red or purple marks caused by suction and small blood vessels leaking beneath the skin. These bruise-like marks often fade over several days, but they do not demonstrate toxin removal or prove that a treatment was effective.
People ask about cupping for a range of symptoms. Suitability depends on their history and assessment; evidence for specific benefits is limited, and cupping does not replace medical diagnosis or necessary treatment.
Results vary from person to person. Fire cupping is complementary to, not a replacement for, conventional medical care. Always consult with your physician about serious health concerns.

Book a SessionYour fire cupping treatment at Wellness Body Worx follows a personalized approach:
We discuss your areas of tension, pain levels, health history, and treatment goals. This helps us determine the best cup placement and intensity for your needs.
You'll be positioned comfortably, and we'll apply a small amount of oil to allow cups to glide smoothly if we use moving cupping techniques.
Using controlled flame technique, we create suction and place cups on targeted areas. You may feel pulling or pressure during suction. Tell your practitioner if it hurts or feels uncomfortable. Cups typically remain in place for 5–15 minutes.
Depending on your condition, we may use:
When appropriate, your practitioner may discuss cupping alongside other modalities, without any guarantee that combining them improves results:
We provide individualized aftercare advice, including managing temporary skin tenderness or marks and adjusting activity if needed.
Some people notice changes in comfort or movement after treatment, while others may not. Temporary skin marks can occur; relief or recovery cannot be guaranteed after a particular number of sessions.
| Comparison | Fire Cupping | Other Method |
|---|---|---|
| vs. Suction Pump Cupping | Suction generated by briefly heating the air in a cup | Suction generated mechanically with a pump |
| vs. Massage | Uses suction to pull the skin into the cup | Kneads and compresses tissue |
| vs. Dry Needling | Applies suction to a selected skin area | Targets specific trigger points with precision |
Cupping can leave temporary circular red or purple marks. Their appearance is influenced by suction intensity, treatment duration, skin sensitivity, and other individual factors. The marks are not a measure of toxin removal or treatment success:
Light pink marks may reflect superficial redness. Dark red or purple marks may reflect minor bleeding beneath the skin (petechiae or bruising). Darker marks do not reliably identify worse circulation, internal toxins, or the severity of a condition.
Marks may look different from one session to the next. Differences in colour or fading are not reliable measures of improving circulation or treatment effectiveness.
Suction can cause bruise-like marks or small areas of bleeding under the skin. They are sometimes tender, and they usually fade over several days, although some may last longer. Blistering, burns, or signs of infection require medical attention.
Fire cupping may be considered for certain people depending on skin health, medical history, comfort, and assessment:
Fire cupping may not be suitable if you have:
We screen for these during your intake assessment to ensure fire cupping is appropriate for you. If it isn't, we'll recommend alternative TCM therapies that suit your needs.
Depending on your assessment, your practitioner may discuss cupping alongside other traditional therapies when suitable:
Ask about combined sessions if you're interested in a more comprehensive approach to your health concerns.
There is no fixed number of sessions that works for everyone. Your practitioner will review your health history, response and goals:
Whether fire cupping is suitable, and whether any follow-up visits make sense, depends on your individual assessment. Improvement cannot be guaranteed in a set number of sessions.
Your practitioner may reassess discomfort and mobility over time. Some concerns need conventional medical evaluation or other care rather than repeated cupping sessions.
Additional sessions should be based on your response, preferences, and treatment goals rather than a fixed maintenance schedule. Cupping has not been established as a way to prevent recurrence of medical conditions.
We tailor recommendations to your situation and reassess as needed. Some people report temporary relief, but lasting outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
Your safety is our top priority during every fire cupping session:

Inform your practitioner if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, fragile skin, an open wound or skin infection, severe varicose veins in the treatment area, or if you are pregnant. Fire cupping should not be used over broken or infected skin. Your clinician can help decide whether treatment is appropriate and whether medical clearance is needed.
Fire cupping involves suction and a briefly used flame. Potential side effects include temporary bruising, tenderness, burns, blisters and, rarely, infection. Your practitioner will review your health and skin condition and explain whether it is suitable for you.
You may feel pulling or pressure under the cups. Treatment should be adjusted to your comfort level. Tell your practitioner if you feel significant discomfort, burning, or pain; temporary tenderness or bruise-like marks can occur afterward.
Suction can cause superficial capillaries to leak small amounts of blood under the skin, leaving red or purple bruise-like marks. Their colour does not reliably indicate toxins, blood stagnation, or how effective the treatment was.
Marks often fade within several days, but some can last longer depending on treatment intensity, skin sensitivity, and individual factors. Their duration or colour should not be used to judge treatment results.
There is no fixed number of cupping sessions that works for everyone. Your practitioner can reassess your concerns, response, and goals before suggesting whether further treatment is appropriate. Improvements are not guaranteed within a set number of visits.
Cupping may be considered alongside acupuncture or other therapies when appropriate for your individual needs and safety. Combining treatments does not guarantee superior results, and your practitioner will discuss whether it makes sense for you.
Follow your practitioner's individualized aftercare advice. Temporary marks or soreness may occur; avoid irritating the treated skin and adjust strenuous activity if it feels sensitive. Seek medical advice for blisters, significant burns, severe pain, or signs of infection.
Coverage depends on your policy and the service billed. Cupping is not automatically covered because your plan covers acupuncture or TCM. Wellness Body Worx does not offer direct billing. We provide a receipt for submission; please confirm eligibility with your insurer before booking.
Skin sensitivity should be discussed before treatment. Fire cupping may be unsuitable on fragile, inflamed, infected, sunburned, or broken skin. Your practitioner can assess your skin and discuss other options when appropriate.
Cupping techniques vary, including traditional fire cupping and suction-pump cupping. Some athletes have used cupping, but that does not prove improved performance or faster recovery. At Wellness Body Worx, the technique and intensity are selected following an individual assessment.
