Long and complex is the never ending debate about protein, where to get it from? and what foods are best to consume for optimal nutritional intake.  But here lyes the problems where should be we get our information from in a world that is driven by greed and profits.  Each sector trying to joust for their five minutes of fame.  With food prices rising ever so quickly, we need not look any further than the CPI index to see this economic disaster unfolding before our eyes.

food prices have  increased 5% in 2023 alone. if you average 5-7 percent a year increase it quickly builds up. This is calculated compared to the previous year  needless to say that many people have begun to tighten the preverbal belt, recduce their spending and how do you ask is all this related to diet and nutrition?  Well now we are looking for cheaper and efficient ways to sustain our diets, and find better protein sources that are economically viable in today's current situation. 

Hence here we discuss the benefits of eating probably one of the most well known diets and arguably one of the healthiest; the Mediterranean diet, of which I myself am an avid believer that it is the best way to eat bar none. Put aside all the fad diets and and talk about oils and fats, and all.  The places in the world where  we see the highest number of supercenturians  of which are denoted as blue zones of the five blue zones, two are European which represents 40% that is a big indictor that they must be doing something right.  The diets namely we speak of being Italian and Greek are big on olive oil vegetables especially legumes and beans. If these cheap protein sources are good enough to sustain people for 100 years, then we should learn from this and start eating a diet rich in this cheap protein sources. Beans and legumes are rich in protein and fibres low in fats and reasonably priced at a time when price matters most.  So next time your at the grocery store instead of picking up some fish filled with heavy metals or meat infused with hormones, why not try some legumes which are cheap and are widely used by many cultures providing many around the world with nourishment that is affordable and savoury,   If your into weight lifting or sports you can even pick up protein that is all plant based.  although eating is always preferable to supplementation.  Here I will provide some links to some products that I find effective and most all the products that I do list on my blogs I have tried at some point and found to be most effective.  

Some of the best foods that everyone should be consuming are healthy fats, by this I would recommend olive oil (organic and cold pressed extra virgin) and avocados as well as olives; these fats are high in monounsaturated fatty acids and are beneficial, they contain high amounts of polyphenols or plant phytonutrients and antioxidants to help keep the body clean and in optimal health.  Greens are also very important in the diet consuming greens even when it comes to a Chinese medicine standpoint are vital in building blood and nursing the body on a cellular level supplying many minerals that are vitally needed in the North American mineral depleted lifestyle.  There are many fad diets, that circulate social media many of which, if you carefully scrutinize you can find there is some fiscal gain behind the proponents many of which push and promote products to the public.  

Planting your own garden:  Here is something that you should do if you have the ability this is were you can monitor your food quality make sure you only use organic foods. no pesticides or herbicides and you can collect your produce fresh when it is highest in nutritional value; as well you can preserve your produce and make use of it during the year, if you live in colder climates where it is not possible to have a garden year round.  I myself have a garden and produce most of my vegetables for consumption, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants , and beans as well as an assortment of greens kale, rapini, spinach and Swiss chard every year, I do practice crop rotation to ensure the soil mineral content does not get depleted by always planting similar plants in the same area.  having a garden is very time consuming and labour intensive depending on what you plant and how big the garden is.  One plants a garden not so much for the savings, as there is a cost to your time and labour you put in, but rather for the benefit of eating organic and knowing that it is truly organic.  

If you do decide to add meats in your diet if your budget allows for it.  The best thing to do is to add grass fed meats as they are far better quality.  Most people are aware that livestock used for meat production, is pumped full of hormones and fed mostly grains to fatten up the animals they are not given free range to roam pastures and feed on grasses as they were intended.
